The Story Behind the Art

The warmth and charm of well established trees and bushes is something that has always enticed my imagination as an artist.
My painting “Mission Bougainvillea” was a serendipitous result of me walking through a historic old gate into the small back courtyard of the San Juan Capistrano Mission. As I ventured further into the quiet courtyard, I could feel the afternoons dry warm heat radiating off the mission walls and the old courtyard tiles under my feet. The stillness of the moment allowed my spirit to rest in the tranquil surroundings.
As I turned around to leave, I realized that the beautiful bougainvillea hanging majestically over the historic old gate I had walked through moments before, had a greater story to tell then the fountain I originally intended to paint.
I have always loved the color and feel that a beautiful established bougainvillea is able to bring into its surroundings. This particular Bougainvillea made me feel as though, like a warm hug, it was reaching out its colorful branches to welcome everyone who entered its courtyard.
There is a relaxed feeling that can be experienced when we stop long enough to view and contemplate nature’s ability to establish its own life and history around us. The sight of this old and beautiful bougainvillea striving to proclaim its own presence in the world, is what has captivated and inspired me to paint it.
I have come to understand that all living things have the potential to inspire and uplift the human spirit if we take the time to honor its presence.
